Abstract
Oxidative stress functions as a primary disease mechanism which leads to cardiovascular system disorders that affect the entire cardiovascular system through atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction and ischemia-reperfusion injury and heart failure. The body experiences excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production which causes cells to lose their redox balance, resulting in lipid peroxidation and protein changes and endothelial cell damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. Conventional antioxidants exhibit limited clinical effectiveness because they suffer from low bioavailability and fast metabolism and their active ingredients spread throughout the body without targeting specific areas. The implementation of nanotechnology-based delivery systems creates a new therapeutic method which enables precise and continuous delivery of antioxidants to specific body regions. Nano formulations consist of polymeric nanoparticles and liposomes and dendrimers and metal-organic frameworks which can protect both natural and synthetic antioxidants by wrapping them in protective shells that prevent degradation while improving their pharmacological effects.
