Synopsis

Orofacial pain is a multidimensional phenomenon, which is still complicated and remains a challenge to clinicians, researchers, and even students. Spanning a wide spectrum of conditions that will be linked to the head, face, jaw, and other related structures, orofacial pain necessitates a distinct combination of the quality of diagnoses, multidisciplinary teamwork, and patient-centred care. The scientific knowledge of orofacial pain increased substantially over the last 20 years, but it has not been sufficiently translated into practice, particularly concerning diverse populations, as well as in diverse fields and settings.
The creation of Concepts of Orofacial Pain came to pass and was viewed as a well-organized and practical, yet theoretical textbook that merges the theory with the practice. It represents the pinnacle of our shared academic, clinical, and research experience, which is founded on the assumption that orofacial pain cannot be perceived as a symptom but it can be viewed as a separate and dynamic branch of medical and dental science. The book can be used as a reference and educational aid among students, postgraduate trainees, academicians and practice clinicians in different fields ( oral medicine, oral surgery, prosthodontics, pain medicine, neurology, psychology, and general dentistry).
We tried to touch upon the scope and the depth of the topic in writing this work. Based on neurobiological processes of pain perception and classification framework to chapters on condition-specific temporal-mandibular disorders, neuralgia, vascular pain, Dental pain etc, every section of this book is constructed on available evidence augmented by clinical observations and supported by diagnostic algorithm, and treatment measures.
Pain is inherently personal and its control can not be done by pharmacology or interventions, it takes empathy, communication, behavioral understanding, and in many cases interdisciplinary intervention. In that vein, we have included the information on the psychogenic pain, psychological co-morbidities, pain behavior and integrative methods of pain rehabilitation. This book is based on our own values of considering the bio-psycho-social approach to care and nurturing the future generation of critics, thinkers, and curers.
We continue to owe a great debt of gratitude to our colleagues, students, and patients who have informed us, pushed us, and reminisced of the real-life nature of the orofacial pain. The real basis of this book has been their experiences.
Since orofacial pain remains a developing subspecialty in many countries across the world, the hope is that this book would be invaluable to both education and practice - to cause a more discerning diagnosis, integrated care and eventually enhance the living conditions of people burdened with too much pain which is too invisible, unknown, or too much ignored.
