Agriculture has always been a key part of India's economy. With increasing demands for food, it has become necessary to introduce modern farm machinery and power technologies maintenance. Mechanization not only increases productivity and efficiency, but it also lends itself to sustainable agriculture.
The lab manual for Farm Machinery and Power has been developed as per the 6th Dean's Committee Recommendations of ICAR to fulfil the B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture curriculum. This manual provides both lab and field exercises, which give a clear step-by-step description guiding the students in acquiring practical skills along with theoretical aspects.
The manual comprises 16 practical sessions that address a wide range of topics, including internal combustion engines, tractor transmission systems, air cleaning and cooling mechanisms, primary and secondary tillage implements, seed drills and planters, sprayers and dusters, intercultural implements, and harvesting and threshing machinery. It also includes exercises on calculating power requirements for various farm operations. Each practical session is methodically designed with a clear aim, introduction, defined objectives, step-by-step instructions, illustrative diagrams, and observation tables, thereby making the learning process more structured, effective, and student-friendly.
Special focus is given to safety procedures, calibration methods, and work practices, with a view to ensuring that students not only comprehend the functioning of machinery but also acquire the skill to use it efficiently. It is hoped that this guide will be a useful learning material for undergraduate students to bridge the gap between abstract concepts in classrooms and practical applications in the field.
